We All Deserve Good Education, Don't we...? (Blog #2 India)

Global Citizen Year

The past three weeks have been an absolute whirlwind of new experiences and eye-opening revelations. Let me just say, my spice tolerance has skyrocketed to new heights, thanks to the delectably fiery cuisine that graces my taste buds on a daily basis. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

First things first, I had the pleasure of meeting my host family, and let me tell you, they are an absolute delight. Their warm smiles and welcoming hearts instantly made me feel at home in this foreign land. And speaking of work, I dived headfirst into my job at a primary school, with a mischievous bunch of fifth graders. These kids are a bundle of energy, and I must say, keeping up with them is like running a marathon! But the laughter, the joy, and the sheer enthusiasm they bring to the classroom make every moment worth it.

Now, let's talk about transportation. Figuring out how to navigate the bustling streets of Pune was like cracking a secret code. But fear not, my friends, I am now a seasoned pro at taking the bus to my apprenticeship and Hindi classes. Oh, the adventures I've had, clinging onto the handrails for dear life as the bus zips through the chaotic traffic. It's a heart-pounding experience, let me tell you.

But perhaps the most significant adjustment has been the revelation of bidets. Yes, you heard it right. I have bid farewell to the traditional use of toilet paper and embraced the refreshing and eco-friendly practice of using water. Talk about a hygiene revolution! It took some getting used to, but now I can't imagine going back to the old ways. It's all about adapting to new norms, my friends.

Living in Pune has opened my eyes to a world that is equal parts chaotic and captivating. Despite the seemingly endless disorder and traffic, there is an underlying beauty to this place. The juxtaposition of a modern city intertwined with traditional Indian culture is a constant reminder of how the world operates and the inequalities that many people face.

I recently had an experience at the school where I work that struck a deep chord within me. There are three fifth-grade classes—A, B, and C. While one class is more advanced and easily communicates in English, the other two struggle with the language, yet they soldier on with English textbooks. It's a puzzling situation. How can we expect all classes to be on the same level when the school lacks sufficient teachers to support them all? It's a grave injustice, depriving these deserving children of the quality education they deserve.

This inequality issue is not confined to this school alone; it's a global problem that demands our attention. I refuse to turn a blind eye to this glaring disparity. These kids deserve a fair chance to compete for the limited spots available in high schools, especially since the Indian government only provides free education until secondary school. It's become a personal mission for me to help these students reach competitive levels and excel in their exams. It's the least I can do to break the cycle of inequality and give them a fighting chance.

On a lighter note, I had a brilliant idea to capture the essence of my first three weeks in India. I decided to put together a video that encapsulates the chaos and beauty of this place. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this visual journey that will transport you into my world, where every moment is an adventure waiting to unfold.

Let the sights, sounds, and vibrant spirit of India wash over you, and you'll understand why I say that chaos is the very essence of its beauty. Enjoy the ride!
